Why insure your puppy?

From illnesses like parvo and distemper to accidents stemming from excessive youthful energy, puppies are far more prone to health conditions than you might think. Plus, covering your puppy when they’re still young makes it far less likely that they’ll ever encounter any exclusions for pre-existing conditions.

Why ManyPets pet insurance for puppies?

ManyPets offers nose-to-tail puppy health insurance* for accidents and illnesses at competitive prices with no hidden fees. And ManyPets won’t exclude accidents or illnesses just because they’re common in younger dogs or because they’re hereditary conditions common to a specific breed. And puppy insurance plans often boast competitive prices compared to many plans for older dogs. On top of all that, insuring your dog while they’re still a puppy boosts their chances that they won’t have any pre-existing conditions that prevent future claims from being covered.

What isn’t covered by ManyPets puppy insurance?

Puppies under eight weeks old

ManyPets pet insurance for new puppies can only cover dogs who are eight weeks of age or older. But it’s unlikely a breeder or shelter will let you take home a puppy before they’re eight weeks old in the first place; in fact, many states legally forbid such sales.

Waiting periods

This is the brief period, beginning the day your insurance policy becomes effective, when your pet's accidents and illnesses are not yet eligible for coverage. Waiting periods may vary by state due to relevant regulatory rules and changes; always refer to your own state’s policy wording.

Pre-existing conditions

These are conditions for which your pet was symptomatic, treated, or diagnosed before your pet insurance policy went into effect or during your waiting period. However, unlike some other companies, ManyPets will no longer consider most conditions to be pre-existing if your pet has been free of symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment for a certain amount of time — 18 months in most states. (This time period can vary by state; in Oregon and Vermont, it’s six months rather than 18.)

Now remember: If your pet develops a health condition after they’re insured (and after your waiting period), that condition will likely not be considered pre-existing as long as you maintain continuous coverage. And the younger your pup is when they’re insured, the less likely they are to have a pre-existing condition.

Preventative care, including vaccinations

The ManyPets Accident and Illness Policy does not cover routine or preventative care like checkups, dental cleanings, parasite prevention, or supplements.

However, ManyPets’ optional (non-insurance) Wellness Plan is designed to reimburse you for these items. These reimbursements can be particularly valuable for puppy parents, since your dog should be receiving a number of core vaccinations and getting several veterinary checkups during their first year.

Puppy Insurance FAQs

For the most part, insuring a puppy isn’t much different than insuring an adult or senior dog. But there are some things you should keep in mind!

Can I insure a puppy at any age?

ManyPets policies can only cover puppies who are eight weeks of age or older. Most breeders, shelters, and pet stores won’t allow you to take home a puppy younger than this in any event.

Is puppy insurance worth it?

Puppies aren’t immune to accidents and injuries. In fact, since it takes a while for puppies to get fully vaccinated, they’re particularly susceptible to conditions like parvo, distemper, and certain parasite infections. When you also consider the fact that insuring your pup early is the best way to avoid future exclusions for pre-existing conditions, pet insurance for puppies is definitely worth it.

What are pre-existing conditions, and do they apply to puppies?

Apre-existing condition is any condition for which your pet was symptomatic, treated, or diagnosed before your policy went into effect or during your waiting period. (ManyPets will no longer consider most conditions to be pre-existing if your pet has been free of symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment for 18 months.)

Technically, a dog can have a pre-existing condition at any age, but since puppies haven’t been around as long as adult dogs, they’re less likely to suffer from any past conditions. That’s one reason why it’s so important to insure your pup when they’re still young.

Does ManyPets cover hereditary conditions?

ManyPets won’t exclude coverage just because a condition is common to your pet's specific breed (unless the condition is pre-existing). But do be aware that birth defects and other conditions that your pet is born with will be considered pre-existing conditions and will therefore be ineligible for coverage.

Does ManyPets Insurance cover preventative care for puppies?

The ManyPets insurance policy will not reimburse you for preventative care, but the ManyPets Wellness Plan is designed for exactly that purpose. Wellness reimburses pet parents for preventative care, including vaccinations, checkups, parasite prevention, dental care, vitamins, and supplements, and more — all crucial for developing doggos. Learn more about the ManyPets Wellness Plan.

Is puppy insurance different from insurance for adult dogs?

Your policy document will apply to your dog no matter what their age is; there is no separate document for puppies. (You can check out our example policy here.) Keep in mind that policies may vary based on regulatory rules within your own state. Always read your own state’s policy document.

How do I know ManyPets is the right company for my puppy?

Do your research! Get a puppy insurance quote from multiple different providers and read their policy terms to learn what they cover. We’re confident you’ll land on ManyPets in the end.

Can I buy puppy insurance before my puppy is in my possession?

No, you cannot; if you buy your policy before your dog is in your possession, your claims may be denied even if they meet other eligibility requirements. So be sure your dog is in your possession before you purchase insurance!

Is puppy insurance less expensive than insurance for adult dogs?

In general, increasing age is one contributing factor to higher premiums. So assuming all factors (including breed and zip code) are equal, you’re likely to pay lower premiums for a puppy than for an older dog. But age is just one factor in pricing; learn more about how we calculate premium costs here.

Is puppy insurance the same in every state?

All ManyPets policies start out with the same accident and illness coverages, with just a few state variations due to regulations. And available policy selections — including deductible amount and reimbursement level — may vary by state as well.

Can I take my puppy to any vet?

Yes! You can submit invoices for any licensed vet who treats your puppy, including emergency clinics and specialists.

Do I need to submit medical records for my puppy?

For older dogs, ManyPets asks for the last 18 months of medical records when you submit your first claim. But for dogs younger than 18 months, we simply ask that you submit whatever medical records are available. We’ll only ask for these records the very first time you claim, unless additional information is needed to process a subsequent claim.
