Why is kitten insurance important?

Don’t let their youthful meows fool you: Kittens are more susceptible to health problems than you’d think, from parasite infections to feline leukemia virus. Kitten insurance helps you make the best possible healthcare decisions for your pet instead of focusing solely on your bank account. That’s especially important when a costly emergency rears its whiskers.

Plus, covering your cat when they’re still young makes it far less likely that you’ll ever have to worry about coverage exclusions related to pre-existing conditions.

Why ManyPets insurance for your kitten?

ManyPets offers extensive coverage* for your kitten’s accidents and illnesses at competitive prices with no hidden fees. ManyPets pet insurance may also cover certain items—like accident or illness exams and treatment for dental conditions—that some of our competitors don’t.

And unlike many other companies, ManyPets doesn’t place annual caps on reimbursement for approved claims and may drop exclusions for a pre-existing condition if your pet has been cured and free of symptoms for a certain amount of time—18 months in most states**.

...and what does insurance for kittens not cover?

Pre-existing conditions

These are conditions for which your pet was symptomatic, treated, or diagnosed before your pet insurance policy went into effect or during your waiting period. However, unlike some other companies, ManyPets will no longer consider most conditions** to be pre-existing if your pet has been free of symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment for a certain time period — usually 18 months.**

The younger your kitten is when they’re insured, the less likely they are to have a pre-existing condition in the future. For a complete list of insurance coverages and exclusions — or as we like to call it, the whole ball of twine — view our example policy.

Preventative care, including vaccinations

The ManyPets Accident and Illness Policy does not cover routine or preventative care like checkups, dental cleanings, preventative parasite treatments, or supplements. However, the optional ManyPets’ Wellness Plan (an non-insurance plan you may purchase in addition to insurance)  is designed to reimburse you for such items. This is particularly important for kittens, who need lots of vaccinations and checkups.

Kittens under eight weeks old

ManyPets insurance only covers kittens who are eight weeks of age or older.  But this shouldn’t be a problem: Most breeders and shelters won’t even let you take a kitty home before eight weeks old. In fact, many states legally forbid this.

Waiting periods

This is the brief period, beginning the day your insurance policy becomes effective, when your pet's accidents and illnesses are not yet eligible for coverage. Waiting periods may vary by state due to relevant regulatory rules and changes; always refer to your own state’s policy wording.

How does ManyPets insurance for kittens com-purr to the competition?

When you choose insurance for your kitty, do your homework (if your feline friend doesn’t scratch it to bits first). ManyPets coverage includes items and services that some others don’t. Sick exams, for instance, can be pricey for young and old cats alike. The same goes for dental illnesses and injuries.

Plus, an optional (non-insurance) Wellness Plan can help you save on vaccines and checkups, which tend to come fast and purrious during your kitty’s first year.

Is kitten insurance the same as cat insurance?

We love to say “kitten insurance” when your cat is still a kiddo, but technically there’s no difference between a kitten insurance policy and a cat insurance policy. Your policy is simply your policy.

That being said, there’s a sizable chance your policy terms will treat your cat differently if they were covered as a kitten. Not to keep batting this same mouse, but you don’t need to worry about pre-existing condition exclusions if your cat is insured before they’ve lived long enough to get sick or hurt.

Kitten insurance FAQs

Everything else you may want to know about ManyPets insurance for kittens

When should I get kitten insurance?

As early as possible! The earlier your kitty is insured, the faster they’ll be covered* for any health emergencies — and the more likely they’ll be able to trot through life without any exclusions for pre-existing conditions hanging over their furry heads. You can insure your kitten as early as eight weeks old.

What are pre-existing conditions, and do they apply to kittens?

A pre-existing condition is any condition for which your pet was symptomatic, treated, or diagnosed before your policy went into effect or during your waiting period. (ManyPets will no longer consider most conditions to be pre-existing if your pet has been free of symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment for a certain time period—18 months in most states.)

Technically, a cat can have a pre-existing condition at any age. But since kittens haven’t been around as long as adults, they’re much less likely to suffer from any past conditions unless they were born with them. That’s one reason why it’s so important to insure your cat when they’re still young.

Can I take my kitten to any vet?

Yes! You can submit invoices for any licensed vet who treats your kitten, including emergency clinics and specialists.

Is kitten insurance worth it for an indoor cat?

Absolutely. ManyPets kitten insurance covers illnesses as well as accidents — and indoor cats can certainly fall ill with costly health conditions, like parasite infections and kidney disease.

Even mishaps like tail-pull injuries or eating toxic foods can happen in the home. Insuring your kitten can save you a leg and a paw — even if they’ve seen little of the world beyond their scratching post.

Are there any kitten breed restrictions or exclusions for hereditary conditions?

Nope! From Sphynxes to Snowshoes, ManyPets covers any and all domesticated cat breeds. And ManyPets won’t exclude treatment for new conditions that are common to your kitten’s breed just because they’re hereditary.

If your cat’s breed does suffer from common hereditary illnesses, it makes all the more sense to insure your pet before those conditions are diagnosed or symptomatic and become pre-existing. Do be aware that, if your cat’s breed is particularly prone to health conditions, this may factor into higher premiums.

Does kitten insurance cover vaccines or other preventative care?

The ManyPets insurance policy will not reimburse you for vaccinations or other preventative care, but the ManyPets Wellness Plan is designed for exactly that purpose. Wellness reimburses pet parents for preventative care like vaccinations, checkups, parasite prevention, dental care, vitamins, and supplements, and more — all crucial for growing kitties.

Can I get kitten insurance after an injury or illness?

You can always get your pet insured after any accident or illness — but keep in mind that any pre-existing health conditions will be ineligible for coverage. This includes treatment for any injury or illness, or any subsequent injuries or illnesses that directly stem from a pre-existing condition.

Nonetheless, it’s often still worth it to insure your cat after they’ve developed a health condition! Even if ManyPets can’t cover your cat’s pre-existing condition, there are no such exclusions for any unrelated conditions that aren’t pre-existing.

Can I buy kitten insurance before my cat is in my possession?

No, you cannot; if you buy your policy before your kitten is in your possession, your claims may be denied even if they meet other eligibility requirements. So be sure your furry friend is in your possession before you purchase insurance!

Is kitten insurance the same in every state?

All ManyPets policies start out with the same accident and illness coverages, with just a few state variations due to regulations. And available policy selections — including deductible amount and reimbursement level — may vary by state as well.

Do I need to submit medical records for my kitten?

For older cats, ManyPets asks for the last 18 months of medical records when you submit your first claim. But for cats younger than 18 months, we simply ask that you submit whatever medical records are available. We’ll only ask for these records the very first time you claim, unless additional information is needed to process a subsequent claim.
