Does pet insurance cover dental?

ManyPets dog insurance and cat insurance policies do indeed include coverage** for unexpected dental conditions, as long as the required treatment is related to an injury (like a cracked tooth caused by an accident) or an illness (like periodontal disease).

And while the ManyPets insurance policy won’t reimburse for preventative dental care, the non-insurance ManyPets Wellness Plan is designed to do just that.

(FYI, “dog dental insurance” and “cat dental insurance” are not add-ons; rather, coverage for unexpected dental conditions is just a component of the standard ManyPets insurance policy.)

Dental treatments that aren’t covered by insurance

Pet insurance covers unexpected illnesses and injuries, but it won’t cover the routine and expected costs of managing your pet’s dental health, including:

(Just keep in mind that other standard exclusions, like those for pre-existing conditions, also apply.)

Fortunately, dental exams are generally part of any routine annual checkup. And speaking of routine care, ManyPets’ (non-insurance) Wellness Plan can reimburse you for cleanings, dental supplies, and routine exams.

Do other pet insurance companies cover dental?

All ManyPets policies include coverage for any approved claims related to dental injuries or accidents. Most other insurance companies also include coverage for dental injuries. But unlike ManyPets, some companies will never cover dental illnesses.

Plus, ManyPets’ terms for pre-existing conditions may still allow coverage for a past dental condition if your pet has been free of symptoms, treatment, or diagnosis for 18 months. Some other companies permanently exclude all past conditions from coverage.

One other thing to keep in mind: Unlike ManyPets, some companies exclude coverage for hereditary conditions that are common to specific breeds, which may include dental illnesses.

So before you settle on an insurance company, read their policy and make sure you’re satisfied with their dental coverage!

In 2022 alone, we received more than $340,000 worth of claims for these and other dental conditions, with an average claim request of $916**! And the average doesn’t even tell the whole story: We received a number of dental claims for well over a thousand dollars. Such high veterinary costs aren’t particularly uncommon when it comes to complex dental care for injuries or illnesses. And if your dog or cat needs recurring treatments, these costs can add up even more. In a dental emergency, pet insurance may save your bank account — and may even be the one tool that allows you to afford treatment in the first place.

Pet dental coverage FAQs

Everything else you may want to know about ManyPets dental coverage

Are dog dental insurance policies/cat dental insurance policies separate from my primary pet insurance policy?

No, pet dental insurance is not a separate policy that you’ll need to add on to your main policy. Your ManyPets insurance policy simply includes coverage for dental injuries and illnesses, just like any other type of health condition.

What dental treatments may be covered by pet insurance?

Your Accident & Illness insurance policy may cover treatments for dental injuries or dental illnesses.

This means surgeries, medications, hospitalizations, or other treatment related to an illness or disease that affects the teeth or gums, or related to an accident that causes dental injuries.

Standard exclusions, including those related to pre-existing conditions or to your waiting period, do apply.

Does pet insurance cover tooth removal?

It depends on the situation. If your vet needs to remove a tooth after diagnosing a medical condition (for instance, an infection, mass, or injury), then a tooth removal may be covered so long as no other exclusions apply. But a tooth removal that occurs during a routine dental cleaning will not be covered under insurance — though dental cleanings may be covered under an optional (non-insurance) ManyPets Wellness Plan!

Does pet insurance cover teeth cleanings?

No, ManyPets insurance will not reimburse you for routine teeth cleanings. But the optional (non-insurance) ManyPets Wellness Plan is indeed designed to reimburse you for dental cleanings and other types of preventative care.

Why might my claim for dental treatment be denied?

ManyPets insurance is designed to cover accidents and illnesses, which means that any preventative treatments (like routine dental cleanings and exams) are only eligible for reimbursement under the optional (non-insurance) ManyPets Wellness Plan. And other standard exclusions, like those related to pre-existing conditions and waiting periods, apply to dental coverage as well.

Also, do be aware that ManyPets can’t cover conditions if they arise due to insufficient routine care. You’ll need to keep your pet up-to-date on their annual health and dental check-ups, as well as routine vaccinations, or your claim may be denied. For a full list of exclusions, read our example policy.

Is pet insurance worth it for dental coverage?

You may be surprised by how much a veterinary dental treatment can cost, especially if it involves surgery. ManyPets has received numerous dental claims that have run well over $1,000. Also, keep in mind that your insurance policy is designed to reimburse you for many types of accidents and illnesses, not just dental conditions!

What pet dental conditions should I watch out for?

There are numerous types of pet dental conditions, including tooth disorders or injuries, oral masses or lesions, periodontal or gum diseases, and much more. Such conditions may be covered under your insurance policy. Then there are preventable dental issues, like bad breath, that may be addressed through routine dental cleanings or the use of at-home dental products like brushes and chews. The optional (non-insurance) ManyPets Wellness Plan is designed to reimburse you for such preventative treatments.

How can I keep my pet’s teeth healthy?

The best way to keep your pet’s teeth healthy is to stay on top of their preventative dental care before they ever experience a dental health condition. This includes regular brushing at home and professional teeth cleanings when necessary. The optional (non-insurance) ManyPets Wellness Plan is designed to reimburse you for preventative treatments including teeth cleanings, over-the-counter dental supplies, and routine dental exams.

**ManyPets analyzes every claim on its own merits, subject to the terms and conditions of your policy. Exclusions apply, including those for pre-existing conditions. Only claims unrelated to an excluded treatment or condition are eligible for coverage.
